Before the weather gets unbearably hot (as we know it will in the TX summer) get outside with your toddler or preschooler and go on a fun family picnic! While the idea of having small children in wide open spaces may sound too exhausting, you can eliminate some of the stress with good planning. Anytime you leave the house with your kiddos, a great rule of thumb is to keep the outing as simple as possible. Cramming too many activities into one afternoon can lead to grumpy children and an exhausted mom.

    1. Location, Location, Location – When deciding where to picnic start by doing it at a familiar place. You could even start in your own backyard or at a friend’s house. Being familiar with your surroundings will give you peace of mind to be able to enjoy yourself. Once your kids are older or whenever you are more comfortable, venture out to a local park or zoo for your picnic festivities.

    2. Bring a Friend – Children almost always do better when they have friends to play with. Even introverted children appreciate the company of another child to play with outside. Being outside is the perfect place to spark imagination so having a friend explore with your child makes it even more fun! Plus, having another adult to watch the kiddos means you will have a chance to talk to a grown-up and have another set of eyes looking out for your child as you look after theirs.

An Easter Egg Hunt can be a fun event for the whole family, but did you know it can also be an educational opportunity for your child? Here are six creative ways your child can learn through an egg hunt:

    1.Toddlers Can Learn Colors

Before letting your toddler loose to find as many plastic eggs as possible, tell your toddler only to collect a specific color or colors of eggs. This will help your toddler distinguish between different colors and make the game more challenging!

    2.Toddlers Can Learn Shapes

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, fill plastic eggs with different shaped objects. After the eggs are all found, reward your child for naming each of the shapes found in his or her eggs.

    3.Preschoolers Can Learn Numbers

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, use a permanent marker to number the plastic eggs before hiding them. Challenge your children to find the eggs in order from 1 to 20, or 1 to 100 if you’re that ambitious!

For the rest of the ways your child can learn through an egg hunt, read the full article here: What Your Child Can Learn From An Easter Egg Hunt

Is your child’s back talking becoming a problem? Are you tired of hearing “No! You do it!” from your toddler or preschooler? There may be something you can do to help curb those annoying, whiny, temper tantrums.

Instead of responding by saying “You’ll do it because I said so” or “Don’t ever talk to me like that!” there are other ways to help your child learn to disagree with you respectfully. The best way to stop back talk is to provide your child with some independence – but within your own limits. Kids of all ages need a sense of personal power to make their own choices and express their differences in opinions with parents. When parents make all the decisions for them, children naturally want to lash out, and so they do — with words and sometimes, physical aggression.

So how can parents teach their children to disagree respectfully? Read the full article here: How to Stop Back Talking Without "Because I Said So"

We are all aware that preschool is a vital part of any child’s life, although many parents have asked lately: “What makes preschool so important for my child?” Preschool is the place where your child will learn the fundamentals of schooling and life. A place where he or she can make new friends, develop skills such as listening and following instructions, as well as the basics of important subjects like math, language, and creative development.

    Social development

In a preschool environment you can expect your child to make new friends as the students share in activities and various interactions throughout the day. This immediately helps him or her develop strong social and emotional skills, which will determine your child’s confidence and eventual success. For example, a child who has developed strong emotional and social skills during preschool is far more likely to find a successful job after leaving high school and college, as well as maintain important relationships with co-workers.

    Cognitive development

Another great benefit that preschool offers to your child is that he or she will develop the capabilities to take on the numerous challenges that lie ahead in school. This, in turn, will assist in your child’s overall schooling success and will allow him or her to get a more deserving job. So, invest in your child’s future today by investing in a quality preschool education.

Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Jersey Village in Houston, Texas offers all of this and much more. With our AdvancED™ accredited program, coupled with our preschool Fast Track CurriculumTM, you can be assured that your child is receiving the best early education. The teething phase in a child’s life is a stressful time for both parent and child. Your child will be experiencing pain as the teeth are pushing through, so you will need to provide special care to help your child through this experience. There are a variety of remedies that a parent can employ, but you should always discuss any such remedy with your pediatrician. Here, we offer some information about the teething process and symptoms:

The teeth appear in a sequential order

When a child begins teething, the teeth will start to emerge in pairs, set by set, starting with incisors. Each child will begin the process at a different time and this has no impact on the health of the child. Timing can be as early as three months or as late as twelve months. Female infants tend to start teething sooner than males.

    Symptoms of teething

Symptoms will vary from child to child, and some infants seem to bear this process with little or no pain, while others experience a lot of discomfort and can be very fussy. The process generally begins a few days before the teeth start to emerge, and a baby may show signs of drooling, fussiness, or sleeplessness. Other symptoms can include an infant gnawing on the fingers or being unwilling to feed. The gums will begin to get sore, and the infant may exhibit a mild fever. Once the teeth have broken through the gums, the pain normally subsides.

Your child’s time at day care will play a central role in early brain development. Certain activities should be included not only at home, but also in the curriculum of your child care facility.

    • Story time: Your child is attracted to the sound of your voice beginning from the moment they are born. Reading is a relaxing activity that calms and soothes your child while triggering language development. Children who are read to will have more advanced vocabularies, as well as problem solving, communication and speaking skills.
    • Sign language: Your infant’s motor skills develop far more rapidly than their ability to speak. Utilizing these skills, combined with sign language, are fun ways to communicate. Teaching your child to sign indicating hunger, tiredness or thirst reduces the stress of early communication gaps. These skills have a positive impact on social-emotional bonding and language skills, while also refining fine motor skills.
    • Sensory toys: Early brain development is triggered through sensory play. Specific toys that appeal to different senses will help support this growth. Soft textures, bright colors, interesting shapes, and toys that make sounds are all important. Help your child to explore using all of these senses. Fitting blocks together, rolling a ball, and the sound of a rattle will enhance motor and cognitive skills.
    • Pretend play: As an infant grows into an active toddler, the child will enjoy exploring the world through different concepts and imaginary play. Using a few props, let your child take the lead. This way, the child will be able to practice and reinforce new concepts that have already been learned. Different games help your child learn about social behaviors, while refining problem solving, language, motor and creative skills.

  • Jersey Village child care tips: How to infant-proof your home

Time flies when there is a newborn at home and before you know it, your child will be mobile and exploring everything. This is why childproofing your home before he can crawl, or even while you are expecting, is the best way to keep your home a fun, safe place. Here are some great childproofing tips:

    • Safety latches and locks: Cabinets and drawers in the kitchen, bathrooms, storage rooms and throughout the house should be safely secured. This will prevent your child from gaining access to sharp objects and choking hazards, as well as stopping potential injuries from fingers getting caught as cabinets or drawers close.

    • Poisons, medicines and household cleaners: All of these present a very real danger to young children, especially to your exploring infant who wants to put everything in his mouth. These items should be moved to cabinets that are high up and out of reach. Special care should be taken to ensure that none of these substances or products are within a child’s reach while being used.

    • Safety gates: These should be placed at the bottom and top of staircases as well as at the entrance to rooms that are not safe for your child, such as the garage. Make sure the safety gate meets current standards and that the bars are close enough together to ensure that your infant cannot get stuck between them.

    • Outlet covers and plates: Unlike outlet safety plugs, these are more robust and present a low choking risk. Remember to cover all outlets that your child might be able to reach, including those behind furniture.

    • Bumpers: A lot of our adult-sized furniture presents a danger to crawling and walking children, since many have sharp edges that are at a child’s height. Bumpers on coffee tables, hearths, couches with hard edges and other furniture will greatly reduce the risk of injury. After adding a bumper, test it to make sure that your child cannot pull it off.

    • The outdoors: Just like your home, your yard needs to be safe for your child. Covering or fencing in your pool or hot-tub, securing large planters so that they cannot be pulled over, and removing equipment, fertilizers and poisons to a secured shed are all important safety measures.

If you are looking for a company to evaluate your home and design a complete infant-proofing solution, speak to the experts at Precious Baby Protectors for advice.

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Jersey Village, we offer a secure, completely childproof, state-of-the-art facility for infants ages six weeks and up.

  • Tips on choosing the perfect summer camp for your preschooler in Houston, Texas

If you went to summer camp in Houston, Texas as a child, then you may recall the many experiences you had during that time. preschool_houston_tx.jpgIf you went to summer camp in Houston, Texas as a child, then you may recall the many experiences you had during that time. But with so many programs available to choose from, how do you know which one is the right one for your child?

    • Expectations. It is important to talk with your child about their expectations of summer camp . Find out what activities your child is interested in and what ideas they may have about attending a camp. Search for a camp that offers the types of activities your child enjoys and one that provides educational opportunities as well. If your child has never been to camp, discuss with them their desires and their misconceptions and search together for the right camp.

    • Hours of Operation. Summer camps offer both full day and partial day programs. As a busy parent, your scheduling needs are important to consider. You want to make sure that the camp you choose is open early enough in the morning for you to get to work on time, and late enough in the evening that you don't feel unnecessarily stressed during your afternoon commute.

    • Friends. The more local the camp, the more likely it is that friends of your child will be enrolled at the same camp. Having friends at the same camp can be key to reducing separation anxiety, which can sometimes occur in preschoolers. Introducing a small child to camp staff helps build trust and helps you feel more confident in leaving your child stay at summer camp.

    • Visit the camp location. Go with your child to the summer camp locations and get a feel for each camp's environment. Meet the staff, view the facilities and be tuned in to your child's reaction. This will help both you and your child develop a level of familiarity with the camp and feel more secure.

If you are searching for the perfect summer camp for your child between the ages of three and 12, then look no further than Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Jersey Village in Houston, Texas. Our fully supervised summer program runs for ten weeks. We are open from 6:30am until 6:30pm to accommodate your busy schedule. This year's theme is "Camp Nature Kids" which focuses on safely exploring the outdoors, learning and having fun. Since the camp is filled with adventures, learning and exciting camp activities, your child will have plenty of stories to tell when he or she gets home each evening.

In addition to summer camp programs, Houston has many attractions to keep your child busy for the rest of the summer. For example, the Children's Museum of Houston has many interactive exhibits that span over 90,000 feet, making it the perfect educational playground! Thursdays are free family nights and there are many special activities for the entire family.

Contact us today if you have any questions about our summer camp or to enroll your preschooler.
